Valero Alamo Bowl Overview
In its 18-year history, the Valero Alamo Bowl has developed a growing track record of top ESPN ratings, capacity crowds and exciting games.
Last season's Valero Alamo Bowl lived up to its billing as Texas Tech outlasted Michigan State and secured a 41-31 see-saw victory in front of a soldout Alamodome. It was also the third capacity crowd in the last four years and fifth straight game where the outcome wasn't decided until the final two minutes.
National Exposure
The City of San Antonio annually receives tremendous national exposure during ESPN’s television broadcast of the game. The January 2, 2010 Valero Alamo Bowl received the honor of being the "most-watched bowl game in ESPN history" as over 7.8 million viewers tuned into the ESPN broadcast. The Valero Alamo Bowl has now produced three of the Top 6 most-watched bowl games in ESPN history as the #2 slot belongs to the 2006 Alamo Bowl (Texas vs. Iowa) and the #6 ranking to the 2005 game (Nebraska vs. Michigan).
Economic Impact
Since its inception, one million fans have attended the Valero Alamo Bowl. Factoring in the out-of-town fans, the games have resulted in over $310 million in direct economic impact on San Antonio and another $21 million in measurable media exposure from the 100+ million viewers watching the national television broadcasts.
Contribution to Higher Education
The Valero Alamo Bowl awarded $110,000 to 27 Bexar County High School students in 2009 bringing the nine-year scholarship total to $625,000. Through team payouts to the schools participating in the games, the bowl has also contributed over $50 million to insitutions of higher education.
Moving On Up
Starting with this year's game on December 29, the Valero Alamo Bowl will now match-up the #2 selection from the Big 12 and the #1 selection from the Pac-10 after the BCS picks. These improved selection rights should bring exciting, high scoring contests between teams with Top 15 rankings to San Antonio on a consistent basis.
Bowl Committee Overview
As the Valero Alamo Bowl continues to grow in size and prestige, the bowl will continue to expand its reach and involve more of the local community. To this end, the Valero Alamo Bowl Committee was formed in 2002 to increase awareness of the bowl in the community.
The Valero Alamo Bowl Committee is a group of San Antonio’s dedicated business and civic leaders who work as the backbone of the Valero Alamo Bowl fundraising efforts and provide the leadership for the Valero Alamo Bowl’s annual festival of events.
Persons interested in serving on the Valero Alamo Bowl Committee should call (210) 704-6388. The three official meetings for 2010 will be in late August, early October and mid-November.
Members are expected to attend as many of the scheduled Committee meetings each year as possible, volunteer their time to help one or more bowl events, provide fund-raising leads and have a fun time! Prizes will be awarded at each meeting and for members who reach set fund-raising goals.
